Vehicle Description In December of 1960 one of the most famous cars and engines of the 1960's was created; the Chevrolet Impala Super Sport 409.
The 409 was a bored and stroked version of the big-block 348, introduced for the 1958 season.
Initially rated at 360 bhp with a single Carter AFB four-barrel, it had solid lifters, a new forged steel crankshaft, 11.
25:
1 compression, and a more aggressive camshaft.
The only transmission choice was a four-speed manual.
The Super Sport package included trim and chassis enhancements to the Impala.
SS emblems were added, and the springs and shock absorbers were upgraded.
Other upgrades were power steering and brakes, metallic brake linings, a column-mounted tachometer, spinner wheel covers, and narrow whitewall tires.
Most importantly was a grab bar added for the right front passenger to hold on.
Only 453 Impalas received the SS option in 1961, 311 with 348s, and only 142 with the 409.
It was rare to see a Super Sport Impala at all in 1961 and even rarer to see one equipped with a 409.
In fact, most people didn't even know a 409 Super Sport even existed.
Today to see one is even more rare than it was in 1961, the hens tooth of Chevrolets.
Offered here is a true unicorn, a real 1961 Chevrolet Impala Super Sport equipped with a 409 and 4 speed transmission! Not only is this a matching numbers SS 409, but it is also equipped with factory air conditioning as well.
This is most likely the best and most well known example in existence today and is believed to be the earliest known example.
Featured in the August 1995 issue of Car and Driver magazine this 409 Impala SS was owned by well known Canadian drag racer and crew chief Dale Armstrong.
After winning 12 National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) and 12 International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) events in the 1970s, including the Pro Comp title in 1975, he became Kenny Bernstein's crew chief.
This 409 was his dream car as explained in the article.
Later this car was acquired by a collector Ralph Whitworth.
This car has been treated to a ground up nut and bolt restoration and is not only just a really rare great Impala, but its restoration is just as outstanding.
Finished in its original color of Arbor Green with matching interior, this is quite a show stopper.
