Vehicle Description The Avanti, introduced in 1962, was far ahead of its time in terms of its design.
Penned by famed designer Raymond Lowey, it managed to retain all of the design features of the initial concept of the car.

Its most immediately apparent feature is the unique nose, created completely without a conventional grille and taking its cooling air in through a wide, almost hidden, gap under the bumper.

The fenders have a pronounced Coke bottle sweep and the wheel wells are shaped with unique curves.
Under the hood Studebaker put its powerful and well-proven 289 cubic inch V-8 engine in its R1 cars; with a 4-barrel carburetor, high lift cam, dual point distributor, clutched cooling fan, high compression heads and revised intake and exhaust system including dual exhausts with low restriction mufflers making about 240 horsepower!
