Vehicle Description Pontiac has gone down in history as a company of performance and most famously the company that produced the famous GTO.
But, what was Pontiac before the GTO? Before the era of the GTOs, the Chargers, the Mustangs and the Camaros there were the real Muscle Cars that were just all business with big block engines, posi traction rear axles, multiple carburetors and 4 speed transmissions, all from the factory.
Ford had its Galaxie 500 with the optional 427 R code, Chevy had its Impala with an optional 409 big block and Pontiac had the Catalina with its 421 HO.
The Catalina overall was a better car and really gave Ford and Chevy a run for its money on the strip.
Early on GM offered the Super Duty Catalina with a race ready 421 cubic inch engine.
This particular motor was factory rated for 405 hp @ 5600 rpm, but actual output was rumored to be closer to 460 hp.
Torque was rumored to be equally underrated at 425 lb-ft @ 4400 rpm! Even the suspensions came race ready with softer coil springs in the rear and stiffer in the front to allow the body to settle back from all the torque.
These were full blown racing machines.
By 1963 GM was beginning to really pinch pennies so they decided to cut back and end Pontiacs racing program ending the era of the Super Duty.
They did, however, continue their high performance options for 1964 offering the 421 HO engines in the mid-size Catalina.
GM actually instructed dealers to turn away orders for the HO shortly after the model year began, so finding a true 1964 Catalina equipped with the 421 HO engine and all the performance goodies is a rare bird indeed.
Offered here is an incredibly rare car from the era of the big block muscle car that we purchased from its original owners estate; a 1964 Pontiac Catalina 2+2 convertible equipped from the factory with the optional 421 cubic inch High Output engine and paired with its original 4 speed M20 muncie transmission.
It also has dealer installed tri-power carburetors and the optional tachometer, manifold pressure gauge and three dash mounted gauges.
It also has its original positraction rear axle and equipped with its factory aluminum 8 lug wheels and original HO cylinder heads.
Recently completely restored and finished in its original colors of Nocturne blue, black convertible top and still retaining its original and incredibly well preserved light blue 2+2 interior that is in perfect condition.
Its original matching numbers 421 big block engine has been completely rebuilt and a new exhaust system installed.
Its very rare to see any 1964 Catalina 2+2 with a factory 421 HO engine and a 4 speed, but to see a 2+2 convertible fully loaded equipped with a 421 HO engine, 4 speed transmission, tri-power, factory gauge package, center console, wood rim sport steering wheel, sport suspension, 8 lug wheels, positraction, AM/FM radio with reverberator, power steering, power brakes and having had only one owner is absolutely a unicorn of muscle cars.
Even on its build sheet it states that this was a special order.
Complete with its PHS documentation and its original New Jersey title from its original owner documenting its originality.
This is an important car from the era of the muscle car.
