Vehicle Description Mercedes-Benz has a long history and has been a pillar in quality and performance since the beginning of the automobile.
Mercedes and Benz were two separate automotive companies of course, both creating cars that were incredible in both quality and performance, but later coming together to form one of the greatest automotive companies in the world.
The SL was introduced to the world in 1954 with the 300SL which is considered by many to be one of the greatest sports cars of all time both on and off the track.
A long line of successors followed the 300SL with many variations carrying the sacred model nomenclature and they still are producing new models today.
The longest running version of the great SL was the R107 series which was introduced for the 1972 model year and coming to a close in 1989.
A newly designed SL with many improvements, most notably the introduction of the Mercedes overhead cam fuel injected V8 in the SL, for the U.
S.
market in 4.
5 liter form.
These were incredibly superior and far ahead technologically than anything else at that time.
These early variations were not suffocated by the emissions equipment required by the U.
S.
government starting only a couple of years after the introduction of the R107.
The first model year, 1972, had the best features of all the R107's including no SMOG control, small chrome bumpers, full color keyed wheel covers, piano key steering wheel, chrome gear selector and two tone Mercedes-tex interior.
The very early cars also came with only one chrome outside mirror on the drivers side, and manual roll up windows which is extremely unique for one of these and charming in a way.
The U.
S.
models were equipped with the 4.
5 liter V8, but still badged as a 350SL reportedly because Mercedes didn't want its European buyers to know that the U.
S.
had the 4.
5 liter engine first so the very early cars were still badged as a 350SL.
Offered here is one of these very wonderful and very early R107's; a U.
S.
delivery 1972 350SL equipped with the 4.
5 liter V8 engine.
Originally from Nevada this car is completely rust free and is in beautiful condition.
Finished in its original color of Harvest Beige paired with its original early two tone beige and brown interior that has held up very well and is very sharp looking.
A new convertible top from GHH has just been installed and is brown as original.
The car also comes with its original hardtop and is finished in the same color as the rest of the car.
Mechanically it runs and drives great and has just been serviced including all new fuel injectors, new water temperature sensors, new air temperature sensor, new tires, new fuel injection trigger points in the distributor and most importantly timing chain and guides were gone through by a local Mercedes Benz service shop.
The air conditioning is not currently working but the car does come with a brand new air conditioning compressor for the new owner.
Its a wonderful car to drive and its perfect for the summer.
This is a very early U.
S.
delivery car, number 1553, so it has all of the great early features that you want to have including its original piano key steering wheel (1972 only), single chrome drivers side outside mirror (1972 only), two tone interior (1972 only), chrome gear selector (1972 only), manual roll up windows (1972 only), and the small chrome bumpers that really make the car.
Many of these early cars no longer retain all of their original features, but this car does.
These will become the most collectable of all the R107s as they are the most unique and absolutely the best looking.
This is a wonderful, serviced well kept early car that is ready for top down driving this summer.
