Vehicle Description Unveiled to the public in 1955, the Thunderbird was a two seat sports car that was Ford's response to the Chevrolet Corvette that essentially was the first real post war sports car ever which debuted just a couple of years before in 1953.
The Thunderbird with its sporty looks, V8 engine and two seater configuration was a car that truly did give the Corvette a run for its money.
As the years progressed the Thunderbird continued to get updated and grew larger which resulted in it becoming more of a luxury convertible in 1958 with 4 seats.
Although, in 1961 Ford decided to revise the Thunderbird once again and reintroduced it as more of a luxury sports car rather than a full size luxury car that it had previously morphed into.
Customers were very ready for the Thunderbird to return as a two seat sports car so Lee Iacocca appointed designer Bud Kaufman to come up with a fix, and he did:
a removable fiberglass tonneau that would cover up the Thunderbird convertible's rear seats and incorporate headrests for the front-seat occupants.
The cover was originally a dealer-installed option, but in 1962, it found its way onto new Thunderbird order forms as part of a Sports Roadster package.
This Sports Package was offered until 1964 when it would unfortunately be discontinued, although you were still able to order the fiberglass tonneau through dealers until 1966 and they would have installed at a customers request.
This era of the Thunderbird is one of the best designs it ever had and the fiberglass cover over the rear seat with chrome wire wheels is really a beautiful look and rarely seen today.
Offered here is an outstandingly beautiful and sharp example of a 1966 Thunderbird equipped with the extremely good looking Sports Roadster rear tonneau cover and chrome wire wheels.
